Theatre Games Learned
Categories
In a sitting circle, lead all players in slapping their thighs to a rhythm. Next, name a category such as: colors; fruit; types of cars; words that start with ‘b’; etc. One at a time, going around the circle, each person must come up with something that fits the category and say it in rhythm. If a person stumbles or duplicates another player’s answer, he must offer a new category and start again.
Color Your Words
Instructor reads a list of words in a neutral voice. Players then repeat the words in chorus, “coloring” them or saying them with as much expression as possible, reflecting the actual meaning of the word.
Character Walk
Play some music and have group members walk around trying out various postures until they develop a character. Next, offer a situation for them to interact in such as: in a grocery store; in an elevator; a party; etc. This part should be pantomimed only. Next, introduce a new situation and invite participants to add dialogue.
Bang!
Everyone arranges themselves in a circle. The caller/teacher, calls out the name of someone in the circle, for example "Mia". Mia, hearing her name, must duck. The players to either side of Mia, upon hearing Mia's name, must turn towards Mia with their fingers pointed like a gun, and shout BANG! If Mia does not duck quick enough, she is out. If Mia ducks fast enough but one player shouts BANG! faster then the other, the slower player is eliminated. If Mia ducks fast enough, and both players shout at the same time, it's a draw no one is out. If any player in the circle makes the mistake of ducking or shooting at the wrong time, they're out.
