Daly Art- February 2018

2/6- Rosa Parks Pop Art

February 4th was Rosa Parks Day, I thought it would be good for students to have a refresher of who she was. Most of the students knew the gist of who Rosa Parks was, but it was good for them to be able to build upon their knowledge and clarify what they thought they knew; one student thought Rosa Parks was married to Martin Luther King.

CCSS. Visual Arts (Kinder, 2nd, 4th, 5th)

2nd : 2.4 Create a painting or drawing, using warm or cool colors expressively.
4th : 2.8 Use complementary colors in an original composition to show contrast and emphasis.

5th: 2.7 Communicate values, opinions, or personal insights through an original work of art.

2/13- Chinese New Year Dragon's
Lunar New Year is this Friday (2/16), so I thought doing a lesson on Lunar New Year would be fun. Most of the students had heard of it before, but none of them knew about the Chinese Zodiac Animals and the legend behind why it was those animals made up the zodiac calendar. It was awesome for students to build on their knowledge.

I chose to do a more advanced craft with Ms. Eden's class as this is definitely a multi-day project and the seven 6th graders in that class can handle the patience that takes. Below are some pictures of them starting.

With the two younger classes, I chose to do a string dragon.

  • 2.3 Make a collage with cut or torn paper shapes/forms.
2/20- Abe Lincoln Portraits

I continued with the dragons for Ms. Eden's class. They turned out AWESOME!

With the younger two classes, we talked about why we had vacation Friday/Monday (Lincoln Day/Washington Day). I led a read aloud of the book Abe Lincoln's Dream by Lane Smith which I was surprised to find students really liked. I then led students in a directed drawing of President Lincoln.

2/23- Daly Movie Night

I loved being a part of Daly's movie night. Students came in their pajamas and brought in blankets and pillows and were planning on watching Night at the Museum. However, a majority of the students and I ended up playing the board game, Apples to Apples, together for an hour instead. I was pleasantly surprised that all of the students played the game together politely and respectfully!

2/27- Holi, Elephant Drawing

Holi, the Hindu holiday celebrating colors and love, is this Thursday/Friday (3/1-3/2). None of the students had heard of Holi before, so it was great to be able to share the meaning of this cultural holiday with them.
I chose to have students draw elephants in honor of the Elephant Festival which happens during Holi in the Jaipur city in Rajasthan state in India. The elephants are elaborately painted bright colors to celebrate the holiday.

I particularly enjoy the cowboy elephant (the blue one).
